About Juneteenth

Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, the day enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas, learned they were free—more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued.

Today, Juneteenth is recognized as a federal holiday and is celebrated throughout the United States as an opportunity to honor freedom, acknowledge history, and celebrate African American culture, achievements, and contributions.

The Oroville Juneteenth Celebration provides a local opportunity to learn about this history while fostering community connection and understanding.
